Convento di San Francesco & the Grottos of the Hermits
Monteluco, Italy

Monteluco, is located near Spoleto, Umbria on a limestone mountain covered by woods. Monteluco has been a spiritual destination for a number of Franciscan saints, including St. Bernardino of Siena, St. Bonaventure, and St. Anthony of Padova.  They sought refuge in the “Grottos of the Hermits”, which may still be seen to this day. The most famous of all religious sites on Monteluco is the Convento di San Francesco near the summit of the mountain. St. Francis of Assisi lived here for a short period in 1218.
